About the Practice
JTWack & Company LLC is a marketing research and consulting practice begun in 1982 by the firm's principal, Jeffery T. Wack, Ph.D. Marketing is bigger than just advertising and communications. Customer decisions are driven by qualities of the client's product, pricing, organizational policies, employee expertise, and marketing communications. Jeff's "product" is not the brochures or websites or other visible tools the lay world commonly believes to constitute "marketing". Rather, in addition to business school-style knowledge of marketing, Jeff brings the professional consultant's intangibles — training, analytic skill, judgment, experience, perspective, credibility, and humor — that are essential to addressing the big questions about the effective management of markets.
Jeff Wack has completed more than 500 projects for dozens of well-known educational institutions, health care organizations, nonprofit foundations, and technology firms. Research projects have addressed myriad segments of the market, and have employed quantitative and qualitative methodologies including scientific surveys, focus groups, and depth interviews. Organizations also retain Jeff to consult on marketing problems, to evaluate marketing organizations, to introduce integrated marketing, and to lead the evolution of market-based thinking. Because of the threats to private schools of weak demographics and runaway tuitions, Jeff is focused these years on advising schools on how to survive, if not thrive.
In addition to being a consultant, Jeff is an educator, writer, speaker, and volunteer. After attending middle school in Africa, then high school in Illinois, he graduated from Duke University magna cum laude with concentrations in three majors: Biochemistry and Political Science, and with distinction in Psychology. Awarded a full fellowship by Yale, he then earned his M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Psychology where he focused on research methodology and statistics in addition to substantive areas such as decision making, perception, and marketing.
From 1988-2008, Jeff was Professor Wack, writing and teaching Yale graduate courses about services marketing. For two years in the mid-1990's, he was Acting Director of Strategic Marketing and Planning for a large health system.
He has served on the boards of several associations, a venture capital enterprise, and an airport authority; and on education-related boards such as the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and ASSIST, a Fulbright-like scholarship program that brings extraordinary international students to study at U.S. boarding and day high schools.
